Celebrating Tradition and Community at Charlottetown’s Old Home Week Exhibition

Charlottetown comes alive every summer with a unique and anticipated event that has been a staple for over a century: the Old Home Week Exhibition. This annual celebration, steeped in tradition and local heritage, brings together Islanders and visitors alike to celebrate the island’s rich culture, agriculture, and sense of community.

Spanning over a week, the event is a vibrant blend of agricultural displays, entertainment, food, and family-friendly activities. It’s a time when urban and rural communities converge, reconnecting with their roots while embracing the modern spirit of the island.

At the heart of the Old Home Week Exhibition lies its agricultural showcase, where farmers proudly display their prize livestock, crops, and homemade goods. From livestock showing to harness racing, attendees witness the dedication and hard work that sustains PEI’s farming tradition. But it’s not just about agriculture; the event features an array of carnival rides, live music, craft exhibits, and culinary delights that cater to every taste.

What truly sets the Old Home Week Exhibition apart is its emphasis on community. Islanders and visitors gather to enjoy concerts, parades, and competitive events that foster a sense of togetherness. The event serves as a platform for local artisans, musicians, and performers to showcase their talents, reinforcing the island’s vibrant cultural scene.

One of my earliest memories of Old Home Week was when I was about 5 years old. Staying up until dark, my aunt took me into the grounds. The lights were flashing, loud music was playing, cotton candy was eaten and rides were enjoyed. To that point in my life, I had never experienced such excitement.

In an increasingly fast-paced world, the Old Home Week Exhibition remains a cherished reminder of the importance of tradition, community, and connection to one’s roots. As families and friends come together to celebrate, learn, and share, this annual event embodies the heart and soul of Charlottetown and Prince Edward Island.
